Abstract

Because the most recent biomagnetism international conference (Biomag 2004) is taking place here in Boston, it has historical significance. The first biomagnetic measurement using the SQUID detector was made in the Boston area (in Cambridge, 1969). Also, the first biomagnetism international conference was held in the Boston area (in Cambridge, 1976). A brief review is presented of the events leading up to the first measurement, and of the measurement itself, then of the resulting events. A brief review is also presented of the first conference.
